I grew up in Bridgwater, Somerset, England – a market town nestled in the beautiful Quantock and Mendip Hills, affectionately known as the 'Home of the Carnival' – a spectacular yearly event of locally built floats and street performers that is embedded in the life of the town, and traces its roots back to the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
Watching this, as a boy, standing on the side of the road with my family on the chilly November night, I soaked up the atmosphere, mesmerised by the hundred's of brightly coloured light bulbs, the loud music and the mechanical movement of the floats, as well as the extravagant make-up and costumes of the dancing and singing performers.
These wonderful childhood memories are now deeply engrained in me, and have heavily influenced my approach to art.
However, I am never one to stay still and love to explore a wide range of techniques and visual approaches, as well as teach the creative arts at Norwich University of the Arts. I love to express myself through both Fine Art and Illustration, and often combine watercolour, oil, acrylic, guache, crayons, pencil and digital – in fact, anything I can get my hands on to express my thoughts and ideas. This often taking me down new and unexpected paths. To accomodate my diversity of approach, I have postioned my work in two pathways on this website – Nigel Coton Art and Nigel Coton Studio. Please take a look.
I sell original artwork and beautiful high quality, limited edition Giclée prints. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at hello@nigelcoton.com or through instagram @nigelcotonart or @nigelcotonstudio
Thank you for looking, and I hope you enjoy the work.
